Australia Day in 1st Class

We have been learning about all things Australian in first class. We even turned our classroom into Australia on the 26th of January for Australia Day. We had so much fun!
We got a very special delivery from Australia where Laura’s cousins live. They sent us a video of their life in Perth. We discovered that some things are the same as life in Ireland but other things are different. It is Summer there now, even though it’s Winter here. They are on their Summer holidays. As part of their school uniforms they wear sun hats. They wear lots of sunscreen to protect their skin from the sun.
We used lego men to help us understand a little about gravity.
We also wrote and posted postcards to our homes from Australia. Our moms, dads, sisters, brothers and grandparents got a lovely surprise when the postman delivered our postcards.
We learned about Captain Cook and the aboriginal people. We played a didgeridoo that Ms Buckley brought back from Australia. We also had fun doing some aboriginal inspired dot art.
We learned about Australian animals like kangaroos and koalas. We even had a visit from Kev the kangaroo!
