All parents of children in Star of the Sea Primary School Passage West Cork are members of the Parent Association and these parents elect a committee to work on their behalf from one year to the next. The committee consists of parents who’ve volunteered their time and effort to work in partnership with the Principal, Board of Management and the whole school community for the betterment of the children in the school and to support and empower parents to be active in the best interests of their children’s educational lives. Research has shown that children do better, behave better and are happier at school when parents and teachers work closely together and when parents are able to give their children support at home.In Star of the Sea Primary School Passage West Cork a committee is elected after the Annual General Meeting in September each year and consists of a chair person, secretary and treasurer. Every four years two other members are chosen to represent the parents on the Board of Management. The committee, in consultation with the school Principal, draws up a plan for activities for the Association and is responsible for seeing that these activities are run in an effective and efficient way. Monthly meetings are held after which the chairperson meets with the Principal to discuss matters arising from it.
The Parent Association finances its activities through fundraising: the Christmas Fair and Gold Rush are currently the two fundraisers. Fun activities are organised for the children and include Santa’s Grotto, a visit from the Easter Bunny and parties for special occasions such as First Holy Communion, Confirmation and Sixth Class Graduation. All funds collected go towards activities in connection with school life and the Parent Association paid for gymnastics classes for the whole school and Playball lessons for the Junior and Senior Infants and First Classes last year.
The Parent Association organises the Pupil Personal Accident Insurance and also tea and coffee for parents and visitors on occasions as requested by the Principal.
